He then outlined his rules for success, grounded in raising your ambition. 

“The number one hallmark of successful people is they are ambitious,” he said. “You can’t let your vision of the future be limited by the present or past. You need to assert yourself and own your dream.”

With personal examples from his own experience, including a horrific car accident that changed his perspective and life, he discussed how he found his purpose.

“Every day I ask, did I really live today? High-performers are happy to be here, alive,” he said. “After my accident, I started to study and learn and that’s how I transformed my life.”

Find Something to Fight For

“Every day ask yourself, who needs me on my A game today? Why is it necessary that I show up and serve with excellence today?” he said.

That’s the thought that drove him to complete his first of six bestselling books, taking him from financial insecurity to security and changing his life.

“You don’t know how things will change when you finally engage,” he explained. “If you don’t connect that in the morning you have fallen into selfie culture and not service culture. If you don’t like the word fight then love for somebody.”

He advised getting out of our comparison culture that thrives on judgment. High-performers make the most of their time, they don’t waste it.

“You don’t have to give up your Netflix or social media but know the cost. Most of what I do is for my purpose. I’m not wasting my time by blindly consuming.”

“When life is difficult, how do I show up?” he asked. “The answer to that question is your wealth. You have to make self-improvement a way of life. Honor the fact that life is hard.”

When high-performers are struggling, they double down on the fundamentals, he explained. The goal is to get your edge back.
